The NYPD is set to name its new chief of department: Terence Monahan, police sources told The Post Thursday.
Monahan, who is chief of patrol, was selected to fill the position being vacated by Carlos Gomez, who is retiring.
“It’s the perfect choice,” a police source said. “Gomez is gone and Terry has already been groomed to step into his shoes. He’s for the cops but he’s also for making sure the people in the city are dutifully served.”
Gomez was the highest-ranked Latino within the NYPD and the first Hispanic to ever hold the chief of department position. Some had hoped Commissioner James O’Neill would replace him with another Hispanic candidate to reflect the department’s diversity.
As part of the reshuffling, O’Neill was also considering making crime stats guru Chief Dermot Shea the NYPD’s chief of detectives. Robert Boyce, who currently holds the position, is nearing retirement.
Monahan joined the NYPD in January 1982 and began his career as a patrolman in the 41st Precinct in the Bronx.
He was the executive officer of the 34th Precinct and commanding officer of the 34th, 46th and 48th precincts and Narcotics Borough Manhattan North.
Monahan also served as executive officer for Patrol Borough Bronx. He got his bachelor’s in liberal arts from Fordham University.
