The Privilege and Advantage of NYPD, SOAR Membership.
Putting it mildly WE ARE NOT LIKE EVERYONE ELSE! We are an organization
of retired Investigators, Supervisors and Managers from the largest and
most proficient Police Department in the world. Further, New York, the
city we served, the communication, financial and cultural Capitol of the
world, presented a host challenges, demands and complexities, almost
beyond comprehension and success in our over-all mission is an
acknowledged fact. In the process, we (NYPD) are literally a
‘trendsetter’ with many of our plans, practices and strategies becoming
templates for effective policing everywhere. How did this all happen?
Some accident of fate or some mysterious force like in a grade B movie?
Hardly; great planning, organizing and execution by highly competent
leaders (many of whom now serving in various consultant and operational
activities nationwide) great managers, supervisors, investigators, along
with great cops, brought the city to new heights. Now safer, (yearly
murders from 2,262 to 292 last year) richer, bigger, more vibrant,
diverse and attractive to a world wide audience than ever before, we can
take great pride in what, where and how the job was done.
What About Us?
....as aforementioned earlier, we (NYPD) are not like everyone else.
We’re a product of an organization of individuals committed to
protecting and serving others; who were first tested, vetted, screened,
examined both physically and psychologically, then educated, trained
(including ‘in-service’ training as a matter of career long education)
then tested again, all before being permitted to perform our critical
service. Additionally, our members advanced as detective investigatory
specialists, and/or supervisory and management personnel, most by
competitive examinations, thereby performing tasks of leadership in one
of the most high stress professions anywhere. Decisions and duties all
too frequently involving life changing or even life saving events,
carried out with the added pressure of knowing that a unresolved
circumstance could bring about severe consequences for everyone
involved, all as a matter of routine, makes success enviable, extremely
honorable and worthy of high recognition. An additional plus is that we
also provide a tested, skilled, trustworthy and motivated individual
truly unique to the marketplace.
The Benefit?
To those planning to continue, or return to the labor force or
profession, we offer encouragement and support. We also ask that members
remember the unique opportunity offered in a presently booming economy
where many employers are seeking dependable and capable people to work,
supervise and manage in a host of employment situations. For many,
continuing personal or professional development can offer the kind of
focus or endeavor that can revitalize quality of life. Further, our
pension income can make meaningful choices easier by removing the ‘feet
to the fire’ factor and thereby by putting ‘want’ before ‘need’; a
better choice circumstance.
Finally, in SOAR, our lifeblood is our membership and we will endeavor
to develop means by which our members will be able to access the contact
information for both future professional and social endeavors, that keep
us going. Presently, along with ‘word of mouth’ our website
(SOARNYPD.ORG) and newsletter are our best means communication but plans
for future professional/social are currently being researched to update
and improve our ability to severe those ‘not like anyone else’. Please
